NEW DEHLI, Aug 15 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), the premier policy think tank for the Indian Government, has announced its commitment to partner with Perlin Network to progress the development of artificial intelligence using distributed computing infrastructure in India and to develop the concept of an “India cloud” based on distributed computing resources. The collaboration will initially focus on machine learning and multi-party computation, with the goal of establishing and promoting distributed computing markets for these rapidly-growing sectors throughout India.
Under the partnership, NITI Aayog and Perlin will work together to conduct joint research, facilitate industry and government interactions, exchange valuable learnings, and organise local forums. In particular, NITI Aayog and Perlin will jointly conduct a hackathon to explore other use cases for distributing computing on the Perlin Network. Moreover, Perlin will bring partners who can supply computing power from unused smartphones and computers based in India to its network in order to create a domestic, decentralized cloud infrastructure. The nationwide scale and depth of world-leading technical expertise encompassed by the collaboration is expected to result in substantial benefits across the respective networks of both NITI Aayog and Perlin.
“It is well known that India has a vast available pool of technical expertise and skill at its disposal. Less well known is that it also has a vast pool of underutilized computing resources in the form of smartphones and laptops, which remain idle while we sleep. Our aim is to tap both these resources, and leverage recent advances in artificial intelligence, to empower all our local developers and tech entrepreneurs to position themselves as global leaders,” explained Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO of Niti Aayog. “Partnering with Perlin will provide us access to technology at the very forefront of innovation in AI, Machine Learning, distributed computing and blockchain technology.”
Perlin has committed to helping the Indian Government realise its grand ambition for India’s AI future and the more efficient utilisation of its rapidly-growing national computing infrastructure. A special focus will be on AI methods such as multi-party computation, that will protect individuals’ data while training predictive models. Perlin has committed to providing support for greater developer community engagement with assistance running hackathon events, workshops and meetups to promote cutting-edge distributed computing technology.
“Perlin’s vision is to empower communities around the world who are hungry for new opportunities to help them rise above their existing socio-economic situations,” said Dorjee Sun, Project Lead for Perlin. “We believe the distributed computing technology we’re pioneering will help absolutely anyone anywhere to participate and thrive in the new economy blockchain technologies like ours are facilitating globally.”
An indicative roadmap for the partnership will see developments rolled out over the next 12 months, with the Perlin’s Testnet scheduled to be released in September this year.
