Japan´s Meiji Yasuda has superior Credit Ratings - AM Best

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 -- AM Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A+ (superior) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of ‘aa-’ of Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company (Meiji Yasuda) Japan.

The stable outlook of these Credit Ratings reflects Meiji Yasuda’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best categorised as strongest, as well as its strong operating performance, favourable business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.

Meiji Yasuda’s balance sheet strength assessment reflects its risk-adjusted capitalisation, which is at the strongest level, as measured by Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio, according to a statement.

Although the high common stock exposure suggests the company’s balance sheet may be exposed to considerable equity price risk, AM Best considers Meiji Yasuda’s relatively large adjusted capital base adequate to absorb this risk.

The company has maintained a consistently positive operating performance, supported by stable premium income and strong base profit. In fiscal-year 2018, it posted a record high base profit of JPY 589.6 billion (US$5.3 billion) for its domestic life insurance business. (US$1 = RM4.08)

Meiji Yasuda is one of the leading life insurance companies in Japan in terms of annualised net premium and has held a lead position in the group insurance market for a long period of time.

The stable outlooks reflect AM Best’s expectation that Meiji Yasuda will maintain a strong and consistent operating performance, supported by an in-force book of business, which will generate favourable returns on embedded value and uphold a stable economic solvency ratio over the mid to long term.

Buddhist leader's annual peace proposal focuses on climate change, nuclear weapon abolition

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 -- Soka Gakkai International (SGI) Buddhist network president, Daisaku Ikeda recently released the 38th annual peace proposal to mark the anniversary of the SGI founding.

The main theme of the proposal, ‘Toward Our Shared Future: Constructing an Era of Human Solidarity’, was on climate action and nuclear weapon abolition, with focus on the individual lives and suffering often hidden behind macroeconomic indices.

Ikeda describes climate change as ‘a fundamental challenge, on which the fate of humankind hinges’ and stresses it threatens to render meaningless, global efforts toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Praising the energy of youth climate activists, he said: “When young people's will to transform reality merges with an indomitable optimism, the possibilities are limitless.”

Ikeda proposes that UN Youth Climate Summits be held every year toward 2030 and calls for a Security Council Resolution mainstreaming youth participation in climate-related decision-making.

He also proposes holding a People's Forum for a World Without Nuclear Weapons centered on hibakusha and civil society in Hiroshima or Nagasaki to follow the treaty's entry into force.

Ikeda also highlights the plight of children and youth deprived of educational opportunities due to armed conflict or natural disasters, and therefore calls for strengthening of the financial foundation of the UNICEF-hosted Education Cannot Wait global fund.

He concludes with a commitment to continued grassroots action, saying: The SGI will further promote empowerment of, by and for the people, as we address the climate crisis and other challenges with an expanding movement of global solidarity.”

SGI is a community-based Buddhist network promoting peace, culture and education with 12 million members. More details at https://www.sgi.org.

FERRING'S PROPESS® IS THE FIRST PHARMACOLOGICAL TREATMENT FOR CERVICAL RIPENING TO BE APPROVED IN JAPAN FOR OVER 20 YEARS

· Ferring announces that the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) in Japan has approved Propess® (dinoprostone) for the initiation of cervical ripening1
· Propess, developed in Scotland, UK, and marketed in over 60 countries, was approved following close collaboration with the patient community in Japan
· This approval provides women in Japan with greater choice and is part of Ferring’s commitment to advancing Reproductive Medicine and Maternal Health worldwide

SAINT-PREX, Switzerland, Jan 23 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- Ferring Pharmaceuticals today announced that Propess® (dinoprostone) has been approved by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) in Japan for initiation of cervical ripening in patients at term (from 37 completed weeks of gestation).1 This is the first time in over 20 years that a pharmacological therapy for cervical ripening has been approved in the country.2

Around 10 per cent of births globally require induction of labour, which may be required if the health of the mother or baby is at risk.3,4 Cervical ripening is carried out prior to induction to prepare the cervix for birth. This approval offers women requiring an induction in Japan greater choice of alternatives to mechanical methods of cervical ripening.

“The approval of Propess in Japan is a big step forward in offering women more choice when it comes to cervical ripening,” said Per Falk, President and Chief Science Officer, Ferring Pharmaceuticals. “There is a lack of research and development of treatment options for women who are pregnant or giving birth, which is why it is important for Ferring to continue to invest and advance the field of Reproductive Medicine and Maternal Health and continue with our purpose of building families worldwide.”

The announcement today follows a close collaboration between Ferring Pharmaceuticals and a local patient advocacy group to ensure the needs and safety of women in labour are addressed in Japan.

“For women giving birth, mechanical methods may not always be the right option and it is important that a woman’s safety and comfort is paramount,” said Mikiya Kitamura, Vice President, Ferring Japan R&D. “Ensuring that a treatment is safe and effective is a priority for us, and we are pleased to have been able to work together with our local patient advocacy group on this significant milestone.”

Propess is currently marketed in over 60 countries and was developed in the 1980s in Scotland where it continues to be manufactured. As leaders in Reproductive Medicine and Maternal Health, this approval demonstrates Ferring’s continued commitment to helping people around the world to build healthy families.

About Propess5

Propess is a vaginal delivery system containing the active substance dinoprostone 10 mg used for the initiation of cervical ripening in women at term (from 37 completed weeks of gestation). The dinoprostone softens and opens the part of the birth canal known as the cervix, to start the process of labour.

About labour6

Labour is initiated or induced by obstetricians in situations where it is considered safer, for the mother or the unborn child, to be delivered. This could be due to pre-eclampsia (sudden, severe rise in blood pressure and kidney impairment), poor growth in the baby, unexplained bleeding in the last phase of pregnancy or a prolonged pregnancy (the most common reason). The success of induction of labour is related to the condition of the cervix prior to the induction. If during examination of the cervix length, positioning and softening, it is deemed unfavourable, then cervical ripening will be initiated.

Wi-Fi Alliance® brings Wi-Fi 6 devices, capable of 6 GHz

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 -- Wi-Fi Alliance® is introducing new terminology to distinguish forthcoming Wi-Fi 6 devices that are capable of 6 GHz operation, an important portion of unlicensed spectrum, soon to be made available by worldwide regulators.

According to Wi-Fi Alliance in a statement, Wi-Fi 6E brings a common industry name for Wi-Fi® users to identify devices that will offer the features and capabilities of Wi-Fi 6, including higher performance, lower latency and faster data rates – extended into the 6 GHz band.

The devices are expected to become available quickly following 6 GHz regulatory approvals, utilising this additional spectrum capacity to deliver continuous Wi-Fi innovation and valuable contributions to consumers, businesses and economies.

Wi-Fi Alliance continues to support international advocacy efforts to make this additional spectrum available to Wi-Fi users, while also protecting existing devices in the band.

Wi-Fi has been recognised as a foundational technology for the Internet of Things, a necessary complement to delivering 5G, an important tool bringing communication networks to underserved areas and a strong contributor to global economies.

6 GHz is well suited to facilitate Wi-Fi’s continued growth in these areas due to its adjacency to 5 GHz where Wi-Fi already operates, greater availability of wider channel sizes, and accessibility to clear spectrum with less interference from legacy Wi-Fi 4 or Wi-Fi 5 devices.

Once 6 GHz is made available by regulators, analysts predict the first Wi-Fi devices to use the band will include Wi-Fi 6E consumer access points and smartphones, followed by enterprise-grade access points.

Industrial environments are also expected to see strong adoption from Wi-Fi 6E to deliver applications including machine analytics, remote maintenance or virtual employee training.
